Today we will talk about Mr Doré, Gustave for his closer friends.

Warning: be careful to not confound him with the french singer : Julien Doré, there is not link between them even if some people love to think that he is "nephew" of Gustave.

Gustave Doré is a really good product of our region (Alsace):

-He was born in Strasbourg in 1832

-He was a famous painter drawer and sculptor - Drawing at this time was not like nowadays, like cartoons, it was only someting in black and white not really crazy and also sometimes a little bit scary-

He made drawing especially for french novels such as Master Cat, or The Booted Cat.

However his biggest passion wasn't to make drawings for kids novels, he is more interested in religion and so when his colleagues Monet and Manet enjoy to reproduce the reality, Doré enjoys to illustrate the Bible -everyone has his hobbies !- . And so between 1867-1872 he made one of his most famous painting - Yes it took 5 years but it's a lot of work- : Christ leaving the courtroom (le Christ quittant le prétoire), that will be first in his gallery in Great-Britain -Because the poor little Gustave wasn't happy to be seen as a scribbler by French people, he decided to go abroad too, but without the ability to get a double diploma- then it was bought by the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum of Strasbourg after the death of Gustave Doré -a loooong time after- in 1988.
